Grand Rapids, MI: The non-profit Michigan Music Alliance is seeking to be even more in tune with the statewide music scene, as it emerges from a uniquely challenging two-year period. The organization is planning to create an in-depth analysis of the Michigan Music Industry in order to identify trends, opportunities and gather detailed input for how the MMA can better serve its constituency.

“The Michigan Music scene is ready to burst forth with an energy we have not experienced in some time”, says Elle Lively, MMA Executive Director, “We have stayed busy through the past two years offering continual virtual industry education through the B-Side Sessions, as well as our statewide artist relief benefit Spread the Music. Now it’s time to gather greater intel and realign with how best we can bring our thriving music scene together in new and exciting ways that benefit all.”

The first ever Michigan Music Community Needs Assessment Survey offers an opportunity for feedback directly from artists to identify areas they are seeking more support and education, and will help prioritize MMA programming efforts and budgeting.

The survey (offered in both English and Spanish) will be open for input from April 1 to May 1. Results of the survey will be made public in order to help inform other regional music service organizations, as well as be used to support future grant funding applications for the MMA.

“It is an exciting time to re-evaluate our outstanding MI music scene and recalibrate the aim of MMA industry education offerings so that we can all reach new professional heights, together!”

To say that Michigan Music Alliance’s online “B-Side Sessions” have spurred local and regional artists to new levels of professionalism and collaboration might just scratch the surface when it comes to enhancing the state’s music scene.

The third season of these interactive panel discussions – which continue Monday night with a session on “Building a Team” – reflects MMA’s mission of empowering artists by giving them free tools and guidance for their careers from experts with years of successful experience in the industry.

“Our main goal is to give Michigan do-it-yourself artists access to free professional advice and set the tone for collaboration on new ideas while creating their own sustainable music careers in our community,” said Elle Lively, executive director of the MMA, a Grand Haven-based nonprofit that hosts business education programming and community-building opportunities for Michigan musicians.

“The coolest part about these sessions is the attendees control the session by asking questions and really getting hands-on advice about what they want to know about. The connections made with past panelists and Michigan artists have been really neat to watch.”

The monthly 60-minute sessions, which live-stream via Zoom and Facebook, cover a dizzying array of topics that delve into the business end of music for bands and solo artists trying to maneuver their way through the industry thicket – from recording to booking to touring to branding to capturing the royalties from the songs they write.

Monday’s panel boasts a distinguished lineup of professionals with extensive experience in team-building that they say is crucial to success in the music business.

“The right team is crucial. You can’t do everything yourself today. You need to surround yourself with evangelists. It may even start with your friends and family,” said panelist Jay Gilbert, co-founder of Los Angeles’ Label Logic, serving primarily as the label infrastructure for managers and artists.

“Eventually you’ll graduate to experienced professionals. If you’re choosing a surgeon, you want one that has performed 1,000 operations, not five. Same is true with specialists in areas like publicity, radio promotion, synch licensing, marketing, touring, etc.”

As part of their mission statement, “Collaboration Over Competition,” the Michigan Music Alliance’s goal is to help artists succeed and thrive in the Michigan music industry, especially during the challenging times that the coronavirus has brought into the world.

The Michigan Artist Database will contain basic information on the name of the musician/band, a link to their website/streaming services (as well as social media handles), the genre of the music they play, the Michigan city in which they are located in, and the instruments each of the musicians play. If you are a musician or band who would like to be included, please opt in here.

The Michigan Venue Database will contain information on where the venue is located in Michigan, the type of venue (whether it be a coffee shop or a large stadium), their preferred contact information, the capacity limit, and a link to their website, as well as social media handles. If you are a venue or promoter who would like to be included, please opt in here.

The Michigan Recording Studio Database will contain information on the contact information and location of each studio in Michigan, a link to their contact information (as well as social media handles), and any other relevant information, such as rates for using the studio, specializations, etc. If you are a recording studio who would like to be included, please opt in here.

Michigan Music Alliance is asking artists, recording studios, and venues to opt into being listed on the database, for free. Any information volunteered will be listed in the database on www.michiganmusicalliance.org to be used as a tool for Michigan-based musicians, studios and venue owners to connect with each other faster.

In celebration of International Women’s Day March 8, and in honor of Women’s History Month, the Michigan Music Alliance organized a state-wide all female jubilee of joyful sounds offering homage to Michigan's own Queen of Soul- ARETHA FRANKLIN!

This very special all-volunteer project gathers together five recording studios and more than 25 fabulous female artists from all across the state, to celebrate The Queen’s legacy and declare the outright divine power of Michigan Women in Music.

“It is our grand mission to highlight the ultimate power that stems from prioritizing collaboration over competition, while recognizing all the legendary female artists that have risen from our state, like the great Aretha Franklin. She and other Michigan stars altered the music industry forever, inspiring so much of the incredible female talent of today to continue pushing forward”, says Executive Director of the Michigan Music Alliance, Elle Lively.

The track, paired with a video featuring the artists recording at home or in one of the five partnered studios, showcases a multitude of female artists from around the state. Grand Rapids’ Serita (aka Black Rose) and rising star Sarena Rae’s vocals drive the energy for the track in a fun duet. Recorded live at Third Coast Recording Co. in Grand Haven, MI, Sarena and Serita bring a fresh take to the classic song, while maintaining the original vibe. Detroit’s Gayelynn McKinney, who played with Aretha Franklin, recorded drums for the project at Plymouth Rock Recording Co. in Plymouth, MI. The track also features the talents of Ann Arbor natives Christina Nielsen of Jack & the Bear, Josie Ala, and Ingrid Racine. Detroit brought its share of power to the table offering up Zoe Cutler, Sami Blosser, BethAnne Kunert of Virago, Kaleigh Wilder of Gnostikos, Emily Burns of Escaping Pavement, and Alice Sun. Hannah Laine of Earth Radio, Stacy Noonan of Beaver Xing, Jennifer Adams of Annagail, Patty PerShayla, Rachel White of Lighting Matches, Sandra Effert, Olivia Vargas of August, and Lauren Kelley all hail from the Grand Rapids area. Kalamazoo ramped up the project with the likes of Carolyn Koebel, Carrie McFerrin, Rachel Gorman of The Red Sea Pedestrians, Dede Alder of Dede and the Dreamers, Lauren Elliott, Roo Heins of Oneirine, and Laurie Laing of Belfast Gin.

The track was mixed by female engineers, Cynthea Kelley and Maggie Heeren at La Luna Recording & Sound in Kalamazoo, MI. Dogtown Studio in Grand Rapids collaborated to create the video that features the behind the scenes footage recorded by participants. Later this month, the podcast Impactually, will be releasing a very special episode about the collaborative project and the musical legacies that are being created by the women of Michigan.

“Fun, inspiring and impactful projects like this one illustrate the extraordinary diversity and depth of the Michigan Music Community as a whole. Not only do they leave a lasting impression, but also remind us how much pride we all share in our rich Michigan musical heritage. The Michigan Music Alliance is ever focused on creating a higher standard for us all working together as a music community.” says Elle.

They join the founding board members, Bill & Binnie Chrysler, Liz Pellegrom, and Sheridan Tongue. We are absolutely thrilled to welcome the dedication, passion, and experience that these qualified indivduals have curated over their careers.

 • John Sinkevics is a lifelong journalist who started the Local Spins website covering West Michigan's music scene in 2012. After serving as a lead music critic and entertainment writer for The Grand Rapids Press for 10 years, he now serves as editor and publisher of Local Spins, providing news updates on Grand Rapids-area musical happenings, band features, photo galleries, concert and album reviews, podcasts and guest columns, as well as hosting the weekly Local Spins on WYCE radio show at 11 a.m. Fridays on WYCE (88.1 FM) spotlighting local and regional music and interviews with Michigan artists. He holds an honors degree in journalism from the University of Michigan and is co-founder of The Honeytones, once described as “the deans of Grand Rapids’ pop-rock scene” and a band that stages an annual Feedback concert to benefit Access of West Michigan’s food pantries for the needy -- an event that's featured dozens of other West Michigan artists for the past two decades.

 • Detroit-based Nancy Schoenheide Phares is a lifelong music superfan whose toddler infatuation with the Beatles, and later all artists rooted in the 70’s west coast folk rock lexicon led to a career path which includes radio station management in both Michigan and California, and serving as Executive Director/Co-Producer of the Detroit Music Awards for nearly a decade. She also helped craft the communications strategy and signature music programs for the revived Michigan State Fair. Nancy currently mentors and provides strategic marketing and media support for a variety of Michigan artists, businesses and events. More about Nancy at www.RockSteady.Biz

 • Shane German moved to Grand Rapids in 2015 with over 20 years of professional music industry experience. He started as a volunteer programmer at WYCE in 2016, eventually moving into his full time role as WYCE Music Director in 2018. Between 1995 and 2004, Shane was a music buyer for Tower Records, Circuit City, and Plan 9 Music in Richmond, Va., working directly with label clients such as Warner Brothers, Sony Music, EMI, Universal Music, and numerous independent record labels. In 2004, he became Manager of Artist and Label Relations at SoundExchange, the only organization designated by the U.S. Copyright Office to collect and distribute digital performance royalties for recording artists and record labels from digital, satellite and streaming internet radio services. In 2012, Shane moved from Washington DC to New York City to be Head of U.S. Artist & Label Relations for the European digital distribution company Believe Digital. Shane is also a (retired) recording artist who has shared the stage with many artists such as Bright Eyes, Bob Mould, Ted Leo, Tegan and Sara, and Le Tigre to name a few. Over the years, Shane has been invited to speak and participate as an industry expert at many music conferences and was Guest Lecturer at Loyola University’s Music Business Program in New Orleans. Shane has been featured in American Songwriter, Billboard, Spin, and Washington Post publications. Shane also served as a Grammy voter and an elected official on the Board of Governors for the DC Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences from 2010-2012.

 • Chris Newberg is an attorney and partner at Rodenhouse Law Group. He helps individuals and businesses in civil litigation, business, cannabis, intellectual property, and entertainment matters. While much of his litigation experience comes from working on large-scale, complex lawsuits, there is no case too big or too small for Chris as he takes a great deal of pride in providing his services to individuals and businesses traditionally underserved by the legal community. Chris is one of Michigan’s few entertainment attorneys with actual, first-hand experience in the entertainment industry. Chris knows that to properly represent entertainers, you must not only know the law, but also the business. That’s where he starts to separate from the pack. For over the past decade, Chris has traveled the country as the lead guitarist for Gunnar & the Grizzly Boys, which has given him invaluable perspective and experience concerning the operations of all sides of the music industry. Whether it’s helping a new artist get started in business, working through complex intellectual property licensing issues, or negotiating publishing and record deals, Chris is more than qualified to help. Chris grew up in Rockford, Michigan, and is now raising a family with his wife on the west side of Grand Rapids. He is a graduate and devoted fan of Michigan State University. After attending MSU, he received his law degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. When he’s not working, Chris enjoys playing music, playing with his rambunctious little boys, traveling, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors.

<![CDATA[UPDATE: Michigan Artist Relief Fund]]>https://www.michiganmusicalliance.org/post/update-michigan-artist-relief-fund-15ebdbbf6210f920017faab3aThu, 14 May 2020 21:45:35 GMTElle LivelyWe want to say thank you. We launched the Michigan Artist Relief Fund on March 16th, 2020 to raise funds for Michigan artists whose incomes were negatively impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. With your help, we raised over $30,000 and directly assisted 94 Michigan artists. This diverse group was from all over the state, different genres, and every stage of their music career.

As of May 15th, 2020, the Michigan Artist Relief Fund is no longer accepting applicants for emergency relief due to the COVID-19 crisis. We hope that the efforts the State of Michigan has made to open unemployment benefits to gig workers has elevated some of the crisis as artists adjust to the new normal.

We will continue to welcome donations via our PayPal or website beyond May 15th as we retool the fund to service Michigan artists who are dealing with a health crisis, or other family emergency that is impacting their ability to cover basic expenses. We are hoping this becomes a permanent resource for our community. More information about this version of the fund will be posted in the coming weeks.

We want to say thank you to the donors, companies, artists, and media who helped make this project a success. You can read more about the fund here

Our community is stronger than ever. Thank you!

Since launching on March 16th, we have raised $30,327 to help Michigan artists in need. We are happy to announce those funds have helped over 79 artists from all over the state. That number will continue to rise in the coming weeks.

We are hosting live sessions on our Facebook page to raise awareness about the fund every night at 7pm until April 30th. We want to thank the artists who have shared their talents with all of us and brought a glimmer of joy to so many during this time. Starting May 1st, we'll be hosting period virtual workshops on our page, as well as sharing mental health resources for artists. We hope to resume normal programming in Fall 2020, if possible.

Applications for the fund are open until May 15th, 2020. At that point, any remaining money will have been granted to artists who qualify. After that date, we will be retooling the fund into a permanent fixture to assist artists who have health emergencies and need additional support.

Our thanks goes out to you on behalf of the entire music community in our great state. We feel the love, support, and have been so inspired.

<![CDATA[Michigan Artist Relief Fund]]>https://www.michiganmusicalliance.org/post/michigan-artist-relief-fund5e88edf1498e5b00174cfcf6Sat, 04 Apr 2020 20:29:41 GMTElle LivelyThe Michigan Music Alliance is starting a fund to address the current needs of Michigan based musical artists whose incomes are being adversely impacted by COVID-19. With events of all types being canceled to reduce the spread of COVID-19, people who make income fully through gigs and freelance music work are losing critical opportunities to support their well-being.

Please consider donating to the fund to help support artists in your community during this time. To find out more about how musicians have been impacted uniquely by COVID-19, please read this article. If you'd like to make a donation on our Go Fund Me.

You can also purchase the follow items, whose proceeds are going towards the fund:

We welcome applications from any full-time musicians living in Michigan, but will prioritize artists with severe financial impact and immediate need. Applicants must meet specific requirements to qualify. Applying does not guarantee aid.

This was inspired by the City of Boston's efforts to support local arts in their community during this time.

We want to thank Walk the Beat and Crooked Tree Creative for partnering with us on this project.

*IF YOU HAVE APPLIED FOR FUNDING, WE WILL GET BACK TO YOU. Please be patient, as it takes some time to work with Go Fund Me to obtain the money we have raised. Applying multiple times, or sending emails will slow down the process. We are hoping to distribute all funds by May 1st.

To keep things fair and also manageable, we are going to pay out a maximum of $500 to each qualified individual. Please apply only once.

To apply, you will need:

1. Your signed W9 as a PDF

2. A request amount (max $500 per cancelled gig)

3. A PDF contract of the gig that was cancelled as a result of COVID-19

4. A PDF version of communication that the gig was cancelled as a result of COVID-19

5. A short bio explaining who you are and what you do

Application Requirements for Assistance:

1. You must live in the state of Michigan

2. You must prove live performance as a musician is your primary source of income

3. Have a cancelled gig by the venue or promoter due to COVID-19 in March 2020

4. The gig must be in Michigan

5. You must be ineligible for unemployment through a full time job

Who are you? Is this legit?

Michigan Music Alliance and Walk the Beat are both 501c3s based in West Michigan. Our main activity at MMA is providing music business education programming and community building events, but since we had to cancel everything for the next two months, we decided to set up a fund to help people instead. We teamed up with Walk the Beat to help us manage the funds since they have more experience granting money directly to those in need. Crooked Tree Creative is helping us with graphics, press, and getting the word out.

Is this legal?

Yes. As a 501c3 we can collect tax deductible donations. We will be asking for W9s from everyone applying for funding. Anyone related to a board member or employee of Walk the Beat or Michigan Music Alliance can not apply for the fund.

Who can apply?

Any Michigan dwelling, full-time gigging musician who can be legally paid in the US who has had work cancelled by the COVID-19 outbreak. We need a W9 so we can track these payments. We will be asking artists if they are willing to share how the fund helped them so donors can see the impact first hand.

How does the money work?

We receive donations via the Go Fund Me. Anything coming in from any of these ways is going directly into the special bank account for the fund. When a musician applies for assistance, their info goes into a spreadsheet. The entry is automatically time and date stamped. These entries are screened by our MMA board and then funds are released if the applicants fits the qualifications. We want to do our best to help as many people as possible, so we are hoping to turn applications around as quickly as we have funding. It looks like we will be sending money out via PayPal, but this may change as the system improves.

If you have questions, please reach out to us via email at mimusicalliance@gmail.com.
